For insemination, as well as IVF and ICSI, sperm is usually collected by masturbation. The Men's Room at our clinic serves for this purpose. Sperm can also be brought from home. However, sperm should arrive at the clinic within one hour of collection and warm (35 degrees), e.g. by carrying the sperm bag inside the breast pocket.
In certain cases it is necessary to obtain sperm surgically. For this, sperm is extracted directly from the testis (TESE) or epididymis (MESA).
A tissue sample is taken from the testis and tested for sperm.
Sperm is extracted directly from the epididymis in a microscopically controlled operation performed under general anaesthesia. The samples obtained are tested for motile sperm while in the operating theatre. Motile sperm can then be used directly for microinjection or frozen for later use.
