Merional, Menopur and Fostimon

Merional and Menopur are available in package sizes of 75 international units, Fostimon also of 150 units.
In your medication package you will find one ampoule of sterile water and a vial of dry powder, which can be kept at room temperature, so they don´t have to be refrigerated. Mix your medication shortly before injection with the help of one of the 2mm syringes that you have been handed out together with your medication. Flip the protective plastic cap off the vial.

In your bag of needles you will find large pink or orange mixing needles and small grey injection needles. Twist the yellow or pink mixing needle on the syringe and remove the needle cover. Take the ampoule of sterile water in to your hands and check if there is any liquid in the head of the ampoule. If so, snip the neck of the ampoule a couple of times with your fingers so that the liquid slides down. Place your thumb on the indication point of the ampoule neck and break of the head with a fast backwards movement of your hand. Use a tissue to prevent cutting yourself.

With the ampoule of water on a flat surface, insert the needle and pull back the plunger until the syringe fills with the total content. It is easier to hold the ampoule slightly at an angle.

With the vial on a flat surface, insert the needle of the prefilled syringe straight down through the rubber stopper of the vial. Slowly inject the water into the vial. The powder will immediately dissolve in the liquid, to remove any leftover powder sticking to the glass walls, gently swirl, don´t shake. Keeping the needle in the vial, invert the vial and slowly pull back the plunger until the syringe fills with the total contents of the vial. Dont let go of the plunger while removing the needle from the vial. The vacuum in the ampoule would pull the liquid back into the ampoule if you let go. Detach mixing needle and exchange with the grey injection needle. Remove any air bubbles from the liquid before you inject. Hold the syringe in the air with the tip of the needle showing upwards and gently tap it with your finger to let any air bubbles rise to the top. Slowly push the plunger until a few drops of the liquid appears at the needle tip.

Merional or Fostimon are injected under the skin (subcutaneous) of the abdomen. Gently squeeze the skin around the injection site with one hand about handle wide from the navel. With the other hand clean the injection site using a fresh alcohol swab and let the skin dry for about one minute. Quickly push the needle in to the skin in a 30° angle. Depress the plunger in a slow steady motion and when all medication is injected count to five until you remove the needle. Using a clean alcohol swab apply pressure on the injection site if there is minor bleeding or discharge.

Important: use a fresh syringe and large and small needles for every injection.

To achieve a higher dosage of 225 units you have to dissolve the powder of more than one vial of the medication with only ONE ampoule of sterile water. Follow the instructions from above and repeat the steps with the as many vials as you need to reach your daily dosage. This way you mix the content of more than vial with only one ampoule of sterile water. If, according to your stimulation protocol, you have to inject dosages of Merional as well as Fostimon, you can mix both medication in one syringe in the same way as described above. This way you save yourself one injection.

Choose a different site every day, but please apply your daily dosage always at the same time of the day.
