The following factors, among others, cause infertility in women:
The eggs don't mature
This is a hormonal malfunction in the ovaries.
Fallopian tube infertility
The fallopian tubes are used by sperm to reach the egg and for fertilised eggs to reach the uterine cavity. When they are blocked, the eggs or sperm may not be able to pass through.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial-like cells outside the uterine cavity (peritoneum, ovary, fallopian tube). Endometriosis may cause growths that lead to tube infertility but is also often observed in sterility patients with no fallopian tube occlusion.
Changes to the womb and cervix
Infertility may also be caused by cicatrisation after an operation or infection. Myomas (muscle nodules) in the womb may cause infertility and miscarriages.
Polycystic ovaries (PCO)
The presence of cysts in the ovaries can cause infertility. High levels of male hormones often accompany this frequent metabolic disorder.
